Are you looking at the right sample?

Before interpreting a result, match the report to the sample you meant to collect. Check the property or customer identifier, laboratory sample number, collection date, and sampling point. Keep the complete report, including notes and any later corrected version.

A kitchen tap after a treatment unit and a sample from before that unit describe different sampling points. Do not label both simply “the well” in your own records. Ask the laboratory what location the submitted sample represents if the paperwork is unclear.

Make a separate note of the question behind the sample: routine testing, follow-up to a concern, or checking water after professional work. This is an organizational step, not permission to collect another sample however you choose. Let the laboratory specify the location, containers, handling, and delivery requirements for the intended analysis.

For finding the appropriate provider, the EPA's certified-laboratory guidance directs private-well households to their state program or a certified laboratory. Ask whether the laboratory can perform the particular drinking-water analyses you need.

What do the main columns mean?

An analyte is the substance being measured. Laboratories may use different layouts and abbreviations, so read the legend supplied with your own report rather than assuming every sheet follows the same format.

Michigan's environmental agency, EGLE, explains its laboratory report fields, including analyte, result, reporting limit, and method. Use that as an example of report structure, not a promise that another laboratory uses identical codes.

A blank cell is not automatically a zero. An omitted analyte is not automatically tested and absent. If you ordered a panel and cannot find one of its results, ask whether it is pending, reported separately, not analyzed, or included under a different name.

Why must the units match?

Milligrams per liter, written mg/L, and micrograms per liter, written µg/L, are different concentration units. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms, so 1 mg/L = 1,000 µg/L. Montana DEQ states this conversion in its drinking-water guidance.

Here is a hypothetical arithmetic example, not a real sample or a health threshold. Suppose two entries for the same substance are:

Converting A gives 0.005 × 1,000 = 5 µg/L. Converting B gives 5 ÷ 1,000 = 0.005 mg/L. The displayed concentrations are equal; B is not a thousand times more contaminated merely because its printed number is larger.

This calculation says nothing about whether either sample is safe. It also does not make different analytes interchangeable. Preserve wording such as “as nitrogen,” “total,” or “dissolved”; ask the laboratory before comparing differently described measurements. A mass-unit conversion alone cannot resolve a different chemical reporting basis.

Keep the original result and unit in your record even if you add a conversion beside them. Do not overwrite the laboratory value with a rounded number that becomes difficult to trace.

Does “not detected” mean nothing is there?

No. In EGLE's report explanation, a reporting limit is the lowest concentration the laboratory would report; a substance absent or below that limit is reported as not detected. Other laboratories may define their codes differently, so confirm what ND and the associated limit mean on your sheet.

Consider a deliberately fictional result written less than 2 µg/L, with the laboratory explaining that 2 µg/L is its reporting limit. That is not a measured value of 2 µg/L, and it is not proof of an exact zero. Keep the less-than sign.

Likewise, two hypothetical entries of “less than 2 µg/L” and “less than 5 µg/L” do not establish that concentration rose between samples. They express different reporting bounds. Ask about methods and limits before drawing a trend.

A reporting limit describes analytical reporting, not a health recommendation. Whether it is low enough for the question being investigated belongs with the laboratory and local authority. Do not replace ND with zero simply to make a spreadsheet chart easier.

Is the comparison column a private-well safety verdict?

A comparison value needs a name and context. The EPA distinguishes an MCL, or maximum contaminant level, from an MCLG, or maximum contaminant level goal. Its primary drinking-water regulations apply to public water systems; an enforceable standard and a non-enforceable health goal are not interchangeable labels.

Ask the local health or environmental authority which current reference applies to your report and household circumstances. Do not assume a public-system compliance rule is the legal requirement for your individual well. Requirements and recommendations can differ by location.

A report with no highlighted values also does not answer questions about substances that were never tested. Nor does it predict future conditions. EGLE cautions that evaluating a water supply may require information beyond laboratory data, including construction, operation, hydrology, and land-use history.

What if the report includes bacteria or indicator results?

Some results are words such as present or absent rather than chemical concentrations. Preserve the named organism or group and the laboratory's wording. Do not convert these results to mg/L or combine different tests into one “bacteria score.”

The CDC's well-testing guidance distinguishes indicators such as total coliforms, pH, and total dissolved solids from tests for particular harmful germs or chemicals. An indicator can raise a question without identifying its full cause. Take an unexpected or concerning result to the laboratory and local health department promptly.

What should you ask when you call for help?

Have the complete report available. This original call sheet keeps the discussion specific:

  1. “Does this sample number match the location and date I intended?”
  2. “What do this result, its units, and any flags mean together?”
  3. “Which appropriate comparison value should be used, and is the reporting limit adequate?”
  4. “Were the locally relevant tests included, or is something missing?”
  5. “What water uses should stop while this is investigated?”
  6. “Who should arrange any inspection, treatment, and confirmation testing?”

Record who answered, the date, the instruction, and who owns the next action. “Called the laboratory” is less useful than “Laboratory requested the full report and will clarify this flag.” Do not mistake a message left for advice received.

What should happen if contamination is suspected?

CDC says not to drink well water that contains, or is suspected of containing, harmful germs or chemicals. Use bottled water or another safe source and contact the local health department. Follow the authority's contaminant-specific instructions and use qualified well professionals, licensed where required, for work on the system. Do not open well equipment, add disinfectants, bypass treatment, or choose a filter from this article. Follow the professional treatment and retesting plan before resuming use.

The useful result of reading a report is a traceable question and an appropriate next action. Appearance and taste are not substitutes for that evidence.
